Storage Tanks

The Waltham Fire Prevention Division is responsible for administering compliance regulations (527 CMR 9) for all aboveground and underground storage tanks. 527 CMR 9 applies to the design, construction, installation, testing, and maintenance of tanks and containers. The intent is to protect the public safety and welfare from the dangers of fire and/or explosion due to tank or container leakage of flammable and combustible liquids.

• Above ground tanks of more than 10,000 gallons capacity for storage of any fluid other than water is regulated by 502 CMR 5
• 527 CMR 14 applies to the storage and handling of flammable or combustible liquids, solids and gases.
• 527 CMR 4 applies to heating oil tanks, primarily for domestic use.
